Robert Neville - Texture Update and Light Tests

Gun Diffuse and Normal Map

Character Diffuse and Normal Map

Initially I used an ambient light and a directional light to light my scene, and it was pointed out that it produced a washed out and saturated image, so I went back and replaced the ambient light with an area light, just so I could light up an angle of the character, with the ambient light gone I needed to work more with the directional light to make sure I didn't wash out the detail. I ended up using 3 directional  lights and area light to light up the right side of my character and another one above him.

I also was playing with the idea of having two different types of lighting, for the two different types of poses, but I decided to keep the same light and copied over the values from one scene to another so it could be more consistent.

Robert Neville Orthogrphics

I decided to stick with the colour I had on thumbnail one when I did the colour test, because it was very reminiscent of Deckard's clothing; from one dystopian fiction to another.

Adaptation Part B - Update

After my tutorial I had to go back and rethink the tonality of the whole character and understand what type of game it would be, it became clear to me that I needed a change in direction as I began to get frustrated with designing him, instead of trying to force a design out I stripped a few things back and stuck to have a comedic take on the Character. Apart from Charlton Heston's take on Robert Neville, past reincarnations of Robert Neville were quiet serious, and had the lone wolf type archetype going for them, I wanted my adaptation to be different, someone funny to watch and the most unsuspecting hero, I imagine him being permanently Clark Kent, the clumsy goofy guy in the office that wouldn't hurt a fly.

...In terms of style, i liked the cartoony exaggerated look but in terms of 3D, I imagine an outcome similar to games like Tell Tales the Walking Dead.

The drawing on the top left was as far as I got before I hit a wall...I decided to change the tone and strip a lot of baggage and go for a more comedic approach.

I decided to use a mixture of Ben Stiller and James Stewart to embody the role of Robert Neville, I like James Stewart's height and overall presence but Bent Stiller's face was jumped out as a lot more interesting to me.

...here I was using silhouette's to test more much I could stretch the character how cartoony or realistic would he be. on the left I have to silhouette's because I was playing around with the character's journey.....maybe he could go from goofball to hero, but I decided stick to leaving him as a the clumsy awkward hero, again trying not to tack on elements which could end up confusing things.

After settling on a tone and the change of direction this is where I'm at with the character...

Adaptation Part B - Casting Robert Neville

Casting Robert Neville was the first step to figuring out his design, he's described as a 36 year old man with blue eye, but in the book he's a man who gone through a transformation, before the pandemic he was a normal average family man and he had to adjust to his environment, I tired to look at characters who encapsulate the average man, but had an edge to them or a look which shows they're perfectly capable of holding their on.

This world would be set 20 years in the future and with fashion always looking back for innovation I looked back to 70's and a little further for some colour palette and clothing designs.

Character Design - Understanding Phezi (Hero)

Before going into Turnarounds and Final Poses/ Paintings...I felt it was necessary to draw my hero a few times.....just for the sakes of understanding

Character Design - Alaba Costume Designs

Just at the end of the designing stage...where I feel I understand and like what my characters look like, I wanted to redo Alaba's costumes again, I was satisfied with the previous thumbnails. I did hesitated to leave her (on the majority of thumbnails) topless, but as my show/animation will be aimed at an older audience I felt I had the freedom to do it, as it not uncommon for a zulu woman to be topless; as this was a major influence on the show. I imagine her lair in the woods, not much contact with other humans...she has a crystal ball or an enchanted rock she uses to watch Phezi and plans ways to extract his power.

Character Design - Possible Face Masks for Alaba (Villain)

Although I've been working on Alaba's face...It's possible it could be covered by a mask....it's common thing of witch Doctors to have this prop, each with a different significance.....the mask may not be on the final posed character but if this was a real show, she would have to put in on at some point, it's important I explores this....I'm more drawn to the first sheet...I imaging she'll have a collection of masks, each with a different significance.
