Adaptation Part B - Experimenting with Style and Clothing Thumbnails

I tried changing the style of the character, by caricaturing him a bit....stretching the likeness of the top three actors, I'd like to see as Robert Neville; these were, Ben Stiller, James Stewart and Jason Segel.

I also did a few thumbnails, testing to see what clothes he might wear...I put the clothing thumbnails adjacent to the heads that fit the body type. so Jason Segel heads are from A-C and 1-4 are his clothing thumbnails

In terms of style, I like the cell shaded tone of games like Borderlands and the Walking Dead tell tale game. The short animation Black Water Gospel , made me want to have this very cartoonish feel in terms of design but realistic in terms of the tone, at the end of the day Robert Neville is the last of the human race, it's actually quite a depressing story which pretty much describes the end of civilization as we know it and a birth of these Vampire like creatures.

Adaptation Part B - Casting Robert Neville

Casting Robert Neville was the first step to figuring out his design, he's described as a 36 year old man with blue eye, but in the book he's a man who gone through a transformation, before the pandemic he was a normal average family man and he had to adjust to his environment, I tired to look at characters who encapsulate the average man, but had an edge to them or a look which shows they're perfectly capable of holding their on.

This world would be set 20 years in the future and with fashion always looking back for innovation I looked back to 70's and a little further for some colour palette and clothing designs.

Adpatation Part B - Thumbnails

The Story of the Robert Neville I'll be working on exists 20 years in the from now, so I thought I'd briefly look at what the world could be, I touched on technology by look at how cars could change. I'd also imaging city spaces would be more dense.

Character Design - Alaba Costume Designs

Just at the end of the designing stage...where I feel I understand and like what my characters look like, I wanted to redo Alaba's costumes again, I was satisfied with the previous thumbnails. I did hesitated to leave her (on the majority of thumbnails) topless, but as my show/animation will be aimed at an older audience I felt I had the freedom to do it, as it not uncommon for a zulu woman to be topless; as this was a major influence on the show. I imagine her lair in the woods, not much contact with other humans...she has a crystal ball or an enchanted rock she uses to watch Phezi and plans ways to extract his power.

Fantastic Voyage - Rough Animatic

Still quite a way to go, but this is the animatic so far...

There a bits in this version where there's an extended period with nothing happening, at this point, they'll be a label to the organelle and information on what it can do (little tidbits of information)

I like the hand drawn quality to the animatic, but I want to bleed in some colour to give the viewer an idea of what the environment would be like..

As for the Music, the beginning and ending track are royalty free, and if all goes well the mid section with the soundtrack should be what I'm finally using, I've emailed the manger and the musician to see if it were possible to use it to support my animation

In terms of the final animation with the intro of the student who's fallen asleep, I'll be using layers in after effect to bring a 2d image to life and at the end when he wakes up I plan to animate each frame, it   isn't out of the question to record live footage, but this is what i envision.

Fantastic Voyage - Animtion Dev Thumbnails

These are some little thumbnails I drew out when making my storyboard, I had a world which i didn't fully understand yet and I found drawing out as smaller images helped.

Fantastic Voyage - Thumbnails/Designing

Colour Comps

These aren't the colour scheme's I'd be using but I thought it'd be good to experiment and see the outcome...

B/W Comp

I found that looking at mountains, the grand canyon, e.t.c, helped with visualising what the journey to the nucleus would look like in sense of scale, I'm also getting a better understanding of how I could map the whole environment out...

Thumbnails/Designs

Here I tried to redesign the organelles with the psychedelic dream in mind, I revised on what their function were so I could implement this on their design, though they don't look like what they're meant to under a microscope, they'll be labels describing what each organelle is and what they do, apart form the Tubules and the Vesicles which will be flying around the Endoplasmic Reticulum , everything else would be revealed towards the end of the animation, where there's a show of all the organelles circling the nucleus's position as it slowly emerges and unravels itself.

I also didn't think it necessary to redesign the Ribosome as it already looks like some straight out of a dream

Fantastic Voyage - Thumbnails

With these thumbnails I was trying to illustrate the end of my animation when the nucleus emerges before it opens up...in thumbnails 1-4 I tried to represent the Ribosome and the Lysosome with the nucleus in the middle (Ribosome left, Lysosome, right). Though this is painterly, it isn't what I want colour wise, but as thumbnails portraying the set up, I'm happy, I'll be working into other thumbnails to get the desired effect, which is cross between from very sci-fi and a psychedelic dream

Fantastic Voyage - Visual Concept and Influence Map

This is a concept in progress of my nucleus at the end of the animation; it's meant to split apart and slowly focus on the nucleus before cutting to the student who just woke up form his dream. I'm not sure this is what i want the unraveling of the nucleus to look like, at the moment it's just a thumbnail, but I'm looking to develop it into the style similar to what's in my Influence Map

Fantastic Voyage - Early Thumbnails

I started visualizing what I wanted the inside of this cell to look like as you fly through it, I want a psychedelic feel, though these are far from it...it just shows what I initially thought it'd look like

I went back and then did some visual research on what i want my environment to reflex, these are my early visual influence for the next few concepts I come up with;

From Script to Screen - Characters

I took a break from working into my storyboard to try and work on Martha and Dominik, I look to Scarlett johansson to base Martha from, and try to simply the features to match that of James, which is very cartoony, for Dominik I looked to Jon Hamm...

Photoshop - Thumbnailing exercise

The Photoshop Thumbnailing exercise today, was about creating new images from photos...
